The Future Gamers Workshop was an exciting venture (and experiment) in teaching kids from the ages of 8 – 17 (and one adult) some of the initial fundamentals of game development using the Godot Engine. We used our insight from teaching University students to wrangle a curriculum for the participants.
The workshop took place over 5 days, from 10:00 to 15:00 everyday. We focused on providing the students with the space to learn from tutoralisation and play around with simple concepts. They built a very simplified platformer over the course of five days, with the last day primarily dedicated to some pair bug fixing, playtesting and a celebration of their efforts – we had a little graduation for them as well.
Simple Asset Importing
Introduction to Programming using Godot Script
Application of Physics
Level Design using Tilemaps
And a an unexpected amount of Roblox
We found the students to be fascinating, enthusiastic and incredibly capable. The facilitators were astounded by the ability of the students, and how quickly they were able to pick up on the concepts. They immediately understood what we were explaining (unless they were briefly distracted) and were very open about asking questions when they did not completely understand something. They were not self conscious in their desire to do better in their work, often pushing quite hard when trying to mimic examples from our template projects. Many have reached out regarding specifications for laptops as they clearly found great interest in the process and craft.
